Sodium silicate, commonly known as water glass, serves multiple critical functions as a widely used modifier in froth flotation circuits. Its primary roles are as a dispersant, a depressant, and a pH modifier. Acting as a powerful dispersant, it prevents the slime coating of fine particles onto the surfaces of valuable minerals. This coating would otherwise hinder their floatability and reduce recovery. By deflocculating these fine particles, sodium silicate improves the selectivity of the flotation process. It also functions as an effective depressant for silicate gangue minerals, such as quartz, feldspar, and other clay-like materials. It selectively renders these silica-based minerals hydrophilic, preventing them from reporting to the froth concentrate and thus improving the grade of the final product. Furthermore, sodium silicate acts as a pH modifier, helping to maintain the pulp within an alkaline range, which is favorable for many flotation processes. Its effectiveness is highly dependent on dosage and pulp conditions, with optimal performance typically achieved within specific alkaline pH ranges. |
